Module 6 Reflection

This module has helped me think about self-directed learners and the role of differentiation in the following ways….

  1. wow... we must not "be here" yet, but I really really want to be the first poster on one of these things, so here goes: when we lead students into the territory of owning their own learning, then we help in creating engaged, thoughtful students who look at learning in a whole new and meaningful way. They no longer just put forth the effort for that glorious "carrot" of an A (or whichever), but are able to benefit from the true joy of learning for learning sake. Also, differentiation in learning/teaching styles allows all students to find a way to express concepts we need to know that they have actualized in a manner which is meaningful to them.

  2. As a teacher, I need to make sure that I am reaching all learners from start to finish and to provide measurable goals according to the needs of the students.

Self-management is a necessary skill in life and providing students will an ongoing opportunity to use and gain these skills is going to benefit them and society as well.

  3. This has helped me to see that all students can benefit from differentiated teaching/facilitating, not just 'slow' learners. Students can learn about specific things like the projects we're making and about the process of learning and their own way of thinking.

  4. This should show students that they CAN learn. Self-direction is good for them, but only if they do what they're asked. Some students may not want to "learn" and just goof off instead. These students need to be shown how self directing themselves can be good for them.

  5. As a teacher I need to be able to reach all students regardless of their learning styles. I need to teach from all styles, with 28 studnets in a class I think that giving several different styles of teaching can benefit all the studnets as a whole.

  6. This module has reinforced the fact that differentiated teaching/learning is so important. All of our students are not "wired" the same way & will benefit from having the flexibility of differentiated learning within our unit plans. We need to capitalize on each child's strengths & provide scaffolding for their areas of weakness.

  7. Differentiation is something we need to think about for ALL students, not just those who have learning disabilities. Working toward a final project and using self-directed checklists will hopefully motivate students to be responsible and more aware of their progress. What happens, though, when there are students in the class who simply refuse to take that responsibility of being self-directed and won't participate in the group or pair? They may be disruptive to a group who would otherwise be fine with the concept.

  8. I need to be aware of the different styles of learners within my classroom. I have been guilty, on too many occasions, of teaching only to my learning preference. I need to make a good effort in the future.

  9. Differentiated learning isn't always the easiest thing to do. Sometimes I feel pulled in various directions with those students that have difficulty reading the information let alone completing the work itself. Having as many examples, templates, etc. ahead of time should make this task easier.

  10. As far as self-directed learning, it made realize how much easier this is to do with older kids! I see a lot my teaching practices reflected when I was teaching sixth grade but not much of it in my first grade class. I need to decide if there is room for me to have less control without it becomming chaos! I hope to do more of this in my second year of teaching first grade. I feel I do a decent job differeniating instruction but could do better at this as well.

  11. This module has helped me to see the benefit of teaching material in multiple ways so that each student has the ability to achieve mastery. After working on my unit, I can see how easy it is to provide for all the different learning styles.

  13. Keeping differentiated instruction in mind when planning units, help to reach each student and reinforce positive attitudes towards school. When allowed demonstrate understanding/mastery in a preferred way, students are more motivated to participate and give effort. Teachers can better assess their understanding. In turn, students are reaffirmed for their efforts with good grades or recognition of a job well done.

  14. By addressing various student's learning styles, as a teacher I can allow every student, no matter the exceptionality, to experience success and increase learning.

  15. There was good information on determining learning styles and how to use the information in the classroom.

  16. Differentiating instruction allows all students to experience success. Also, as teachrs we need to identify our students' learning styles and design instruction to enhance those different learning styles.
