constant movement around the room...many sites are already blocked by the school which helps alot...loss of computer use would be an appropriate consequence of misuse
Filters would be needed to keep students out of inappropriate content. Also students need to be carefully monitored by adults regarding internet use at school or at home.
Our school has a filtering system that blocks many websites that could be inappropriate. We also have a program on the main computer that allows us to see any and all of the student computers that we want. The best way is to circulate the room and not leave students unattended.
Our school blocks many sites. I have my students sign by the computer number on a checksheet. Also, they do have students IDs and their web activity can be monitored through the server.
Constant roaming while students are on the web is the best old fashioned method if you don't have the AB tutor software that helps manage all the screens on the master computer.
The teacher should continually monitor students as they work. I also think there should be a Parent/Student/Teacher Contract that states what is appropriate and what is not. In the contract it should state consequences for misbehavior.
Of course, the school provides a disclosure & permission form for each student/teacher to sign before using the internet. In addition to this, I will be monitoring & our school has a filter for inappropriate sites.
As everyone else said, "Constant monitoring." Students find ways around filters. Contracts are a good idea, with loss of privileges for infractions. When students have to do an alternate assignment with pencil and paper, they will hopefully choose to follow the rules instead and be able to use the computer.
Again...monitoring. Our district has filters, and a tool called web washer which monitors what sites are available for use through the computers at school. This is also a pain because legitimate sites that I can acess from home which are very useful and instructional sites, are unavailable to me through the school network because the may have one thing that someone deems inappropriate for student viewing.
Monitor use and have students sign contracts with the consequences for violating the rules.
